Aging is different than what it was for our parents and grandparents. Nowadays, there are more people living longer now than ever before. Boomers will number around 78 million by 2030, being a generation that has invested in the important cause of ‘staying healthy’. People now need to become activists in promoting healthy behaviors and try their best to remain active and healthy for the rest of their lives. Here’s how you can do that:
Quit Smoking
This is a critical step in improving your health and combat aging. Smoking can cause cancer, heart failure, and strokes and can lead to erectile dysfunction in men because of atherosclerosis and excessive wrinkling by attacking the skin’s elasticity.
Stay Active
Do something to keep you fit each day, it could be something you enjoy that maintains strength, balance, and flexibility while promoting cardiovascular health. Physical activity can help you stay at a healthy weight, prevent and control illness, avoid falls, sleep better, reduce stress, and even look and feel better.
Eat Healthy Food
Along with physical activity, eating nutritious foods in the necessary amounts can also help keep you healthy. Many illnesses like heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and bone weakness can be prevented or controlled with dietary changes and exercise. Introducing calcium and vitamin D supplements can also help women prevent osteoporosis.
Prevent Skin Cancer
As you continue to age, your skin grows thinner, becoming drier and less elastic which lets wrinkles appear, and cuts and bruises take much longer to heal. Ensure that you protect your skin from the sun as prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer.
Manage Stress
Try some exercise or relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga as a means of coping with stress. Meet friends and make time for social contacts and fun. Successful coping mechanisms can affect your health and how you feel.
Prevent Falls
People become vulnerable to falls with age, so prevent falls and injuries by removing any loose carpets or throw rugs. Try keeping your space clear of electrical cords and clutter, and always use night-lights in the hallways and bathrooms. Also always wear shoes with good support to reduce the risk of falling.
