10 Mattress Buying Tips

There are a number of mattress options to choose from in the market, making buying a new one overwhelming. This is especially important if you have back or neck pain, as the right or wrong mattress makes the difference between spending the day in pain or feeling great. Here’s how to choose the right mattress.

Learn About Different Materials

Before you buy a mattress, familiarize yourself with common mattress types and how they are constructed, such as latex mattresses, innerspring mattresses, memory foam mattresses, and hybrid mattresses.

Your Health Care Provider’s Opinion

If you suffer from a back or neck condition, talk to your doctor or physical therapist about the mattress they recommend. You should ideally aim for the neck and low back to be in a neutral position while you’re lying on the mattress, as this promotes good spinal alignment.

Test out The Mattresses

Visit the mattress store and give yourself enough time to browse. Remove your shoes and lie down on a couple of different mattresses for at least 10 minutes each, don’t worry about feeling embarrassed as this is an important purchase.

Beware of Gimmicks

Sellers may sometimes label mattresses as ‘orthopedic’ or medically-approved but there is no medical organization that officially certifies mattresses.

Too Firm Isn’t Always the Best

Think before investing in a hard or firm mattress, as some research has shown that the best mattress for lower back pain is a medium-firm mattress instead of a firm mattress.

Read Reviews from Real Customers

Look for unbiased reviews from people who have purchased mattresses you are interested in.

Ask for Recommendations

Ask your friends and family members to give you their suggestions and consider posting online with health details so that people with similar experiences can give specific recommendations.

Consider Adjustable Beds.

If you’re more comfortable in a recliner than lying down, try out an adjustable bed as this option allows you to elevate your head and knees slightly, relieving lower back pressure.

Trial Periods and Return Policies.

Mattress companies usually have a trial period, guaranteeing a free return within a certain time frame if you are unsatisfied. Ensure you read the fine print and understand all the details before investing.

Check the Warranty.

Before buying, verify the warranty for your mattress, in case it is defective or breaks down. Often mattresses will have a minimum of a 10-year replacement or non-prorated warranty.
